Please Note: that This is NOT one of our Broke Billionaire interviews. This is an interview with the Broke Billionaire, i.e me. The questions were all submitted by Bongani Shaun Buti.
I heard you resigned from your previous job, what was exactly were you doing?
Yes that’s partially true. Technically a volunteered for retrenchment. I have been working on a couple of business ideas for a while now and always planned on resigning at the end of this year, so when I heard our company were doing retrenchments, I just saw it as the perfect opportunity to get out. So I put my name down for voluntary retrenchment, even though I wasn’t affected.
I was working as an Electronic Technologist at an Engineering Company in Cape Town. I was basically working in a Laboratory environment, white coats, private access cards and such.
Why did you decide to resign?
There’s a couple of reasons why I decided to resign. The main reason I decided to resign was because I lost my passion for what I was doing. A lot of people feel this way about their jobs but many stay because they need the money. I also got tired of working for a boss, because I’ve always had the entrepreneurial spirit in me so working for a boss until I’m 60 was never part of my life plan.
Finally I wanted to see if I have what it takes to start, run and grow a successful business in a country where Entrepreneurship is frowned upon.
What has been the highlight of your career so far/to date?
I don’t have any specific highlights. We’ve done some amazing projects at work (in a Technological sense) which I’m thankful to have been apart of. Getting my Project Management qualification this year has also been a highlight. I learned a lot from doing that course.
What is the one thing you would love to achieve before you depart this life?
I’d love to build a successful company that creates jobs and adds value to my community. I’d also love to visit Anfield Stadium to watch my beloved Liverpool play live.
Who is the target market of Broke Billionaire’s and what kind of stories can they expect to find in your website?
The target market is young, ambitions, fashion conscious, hip-hop loving South Africans. They can expect to find the latest hip-hop music, movie reviews, album reviews, men’s streetwear fashion, sneakers, inspiring interviews with South African Entrepreneurs and a bit of Art. In a nutshell, It’s just a dope blog with fresh content.
Tell us a bit about other endeavors that you busy with besides Broke Billionaires and Cheka???
I’m working on an online store concept which will sell Premium Men‘s Streetwear. I feel passionate about pushing the online retail game here in South Africa. Most people think I’m crazy and the common response I get is “people won’t buy online”. I say why not give it a shot hey?
I’m also working on getting my other company, Ash Digital Media back on its feet, I started that company about 3 years ago but I was too inexperienced at the time and lost focus. I feel that I’ve got more experience now, so I’m ready to resurrect Ash Digital Media.
I’ve got a couple of other business ventures in the pipeline but for now I’m focusing on those three because I don’t want to put too much on my plate. My motto is start small, but think BIG.
